I'm not an anti-nationalist, I'm just concerned about the happenings in the country. By now everyone knows about the safety of girls in India or lack thereof.
Every now and then a particular case goes viral, people come together as one to post stuff about punishing the culprit, candle marches are held, women are given advice on how to be safer and whatnot.
I'm not saying that when these cases are fought the victim doesn't get justice, in some cases she does but she also has to go through the torture for years.
Our society is the main reason.
"Who asked you to be wearing revealing clothes?" "Why were you drunk?" "Why were you all alone?" "Why were you out, late at night?"
These kinds of allegations and accusations are part of the reason why some people don't even get their cases registered. What about the millions of people whose cases don't even get registered or they fail to gather the media's attention?
"Jo hogya woh hogya" "Biradri mein naak katwani hai kya?" "Isko upar uchalne se koi fayda nahi"
I was reading some cases online and what I found was not only shocking but disgusting. In some cities, the rapist is supposed to marry the victim because who else will? Imagine spending the rest of your life with someone whose mere presence sends shivers down your spine.
It isn't about Nirbhaya or jyoti, It is about every frigging victim, no matter how small or big the crime was. Everyone deserves justice.
Apparently getting raped is not enough, you need to be burned alive for people to understand the gravity of the situation.
Every year the same thing happens, I'm sorry I mistook the time frame. Every day the same thing happens and yet all these culprits move around freely.
What's the point of this post? Just trying to make people realise that getting justice for one case isn't something worthy of celebration or joy when millions of other people are still suffering.
Signing off,
Yours flawed,
Gargi Thakur.
