Global Impact of the War in Ukraine

While the world is still recovering from the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, a war ensuing in Ukraine has had a major impact on countries all over the globe. It is said to be a cost-of-living crisis that directly affects food, energy, and finances.

While the people currently residing in Ukraine have to fear for their lives because of all the bloodshed caused by the war, people living far from Ukraine aren’t better off either. About 94 countries, comprising a population of an estimated 1.6 billion, are directly affected by the war in Ukraine. Quite a few (1.2 billion approximately) are facing problems with all three dimensions- food, energy, and finances. As with every other crisis, some regions are affected much more than others- Countries in Africa are most vulnerable to all three dimensions of the crisis, while countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, have the finance and energy dimensions to worry about.

While everyone knows nothing good ever comes out of a war, there are far too many negatives to look forward to, such as, social and economic chaos is predicted to ensue globally as the financial markets crash due to food and energy scarcity, leading to hunger and dire poverty. The drop in finances is also going to lead to social unrest amongst the people, soon followed by political instability.

Due to the scale of the global crisis, focusing on just one dimension isn’t going to fix the problem, all the dimensions need to be tackled together. In times like this, only one thing can be done, countries that are less vulnerable need to step in to help those who are in dire need. The food shortage needs to be taken care of first, followed by the judicial use of resources to save energy and finances need to be taken care of, simultaneously.
