I remember being in school and all my friends discussing how great F.R.I.E.N.D.S was. (hehe, get it?) However, I was never intrigued to watch it until recently. What can I say, the peer pressure finally got to me when one of my friends asked me to watch the show, if not for the fun, just to review it.
Couldn’t turn down that golden opportunity now, could I?
While my comments and reviews about the show would take up an entirely different post, my intention today is to discuss why Rachel was such a bitch. I mean, all of us love Jennifer Aniston, but sorry, loving Rachel Green is where I throw my hands up in the air. Everyone says Ross is the most-hated character, sure, there were some flaws in his personality that you just couldn’t ignore, but these Rachel flaws couldn’t be ignored too. At least, not by me. Now, mind you, I’m not one of the biggest fans of the show, so please forgive me if I quote something incorrectly. I hope that by the end of the article, you’ll agree with me in case you don’t already 🙂
She left Barry at the alter
The very first episode of the first season showed Rachel leaving Barry at the altar. Now, if she didn’t want to marry him, there are always other ways to break a guy’s heart(which she very well knew about.)
She did not understand the meaning of girl code
Throughout the seasons, Rachel chooses to sleep with guys that Monica and Phoebe like (sure, it was occasionally, but it could have been avoided entirely too.)
She convinced Bonnie to shave her head
I don’t think I even need to explain this one because who the hell does that??
She couldn’t care less about people’s emotions
Imagine someone got you a gift and you didn’t like it, you would at least have the courtesy and politeness to keep it with you. As they say, the gift doesn’t matter but the intentions, thoughts, and efforts, behind it, do. Even then, Rachel would always exchange every gift that she ever got from her friends.
One day she loved Ross, the next day she didn’t
Now, how many times has Rachel been confused about her feelings for Ross throughout the show? She got Ross to break up with Julie then broke up with him because of a stupid PROs and CONs list that he had made. She got Ross to break up with Bonnie (after she asked Bonnie to shave her head) only to break up with Ross again because she wanted him to take full responsibility for everything that had gone wrong in their relationship. When Ross was about to get married, she decided to fly all the way to London and confess her love for him.
She wasn’t professional
Having a crush on the clients you have is one thing, pursuing them is another. Keeping even that aside, she chose to hire Tag as her intern completely on the basis of his looks instead of the more qualified candidate. The worst part, she could never even remember Tag’s last name.
She was a terrible houseguest
When she was living with Monica, it was continuously shown that Rachel never helped around the house. Monica was the one who did all the cooking and the cleaning while Rachel was well, Rachel.
She couldn’t share anyone
Whether the case is of her relationship with Ross or of her friendship with Monica and Phoebe, she never wanted anyone else to be around. When Ross started dating Julie and Monica wanted to hang out with her, (obviously, Duh! Julie is her brother’s girlfriend, of course, she should share a bond with her) Rachel threw a fit about it.
Phew, while I don’t think I’ve covered everything, I probably never could. Honestly, I don’t hate Rachel Green’s character, but I can’t help but notice these negative parts of her personality. While the show had a good premise overall, the characters could have definitely been better or at least improved their personalities throughout the seasons.
Signing off,
